Welcome to Highlands Plateau
Highlands sits high atop a plateau at an elevation of 4,118 feet, in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The town was founded in 1875 by two Kansas land developers. According to local lore, the developers drew a line on the map from New York to New Orleans and another from Chicago to Savannah. They believed the point at which the lines intersected would become a major thoroughfare and great population center. Today, Highlands is the highest incorporated town east of the Rockies and an incredibly popular summer resort destination.
