Highlands Falls Golf Professionals

Allen Chandler

I was introduced to golf at an early age by my father.  I played competitively as a junior golfer through High School.

I decided to pursue a career in golf at the age of 25 in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  I landed my first job at PGA National Golf Club.

The resort club had numerous aspiring golf professionals all working toward the same goal and this experience laid the foundation for my development.
I pursued numerous opportunities after PGA National that further helped me grow into a well-rounded golf professional.

I am forever grateful to my father, fellow PGA mentors, staff members and the membership at Highlands Falls for my continuing growth.

I enjoy playing and teaching the game as much today as I did when I started thirty-three years ago.  Nothing is quite as rewarding as having a breakthrough lesson with a member.  A good golf lesson is a collaboration between student and instructor.  Above all, a student should leave the lesson with a plan for improvement and be encouraged to forge on in their pursuit to grow and love the game.

At the age of 23 after reading “Golf In The Kingdom”, by Michael Murphey and the advice of a friend who   was dying of Hodgkin lymphoma, my path was set to be a golf professional. The book inspired me to examine the parallels of the game and how we live our lives and my friend gave me the perspective at the time of how precious that life can be.

While attending the College of Sequoias JC, I played two years of golf, quickly becoming interested in helping both my fellow team mates and the coaching staff.

I began my apprenticeship in 1991 at the Sierra View Golf Course in Visalia CA,
owned by former PGA tour player and Teacher to Jerry Heard- Ralph Lomeli.

In 1995 while working for Steve Menchinella at the Sunnyside CC in Fresno, CA I was sent to become a certified club fitter with the Slazenger Corporation in Greenville SC. It is there and then that I fell in love with the South.
I met an assistant there from Augusta CC, who was looking to leave to pursue his first Head Professional job and so he persuaded me to interview for his assistant position. I did and was hired, but the golf professional was looking to leave Augusta and relocate to Hickory, NC. I said yes to moving to Hickory.
