Our Transformation

Our Roots

Highlands Falls wasn’t always the picturesque waterfall course we know and love today- from it’s origins in the 1950’s, shaping greens with a bulldozer, trailer and farm tractor, to Joe Lee’s 1979 redesign, our club understands the trials, tribulations and gratification that comes with growth and expansion. We may be in the mountains, but this Club doesn’t rest on its laurels!

Our fervent approach to growing with our Members while creating a fun, welcoming environment was woven into our roots by the Club’s founder, the late Mr. Leland Speed. Leland valued relationships with friends and family, and the beautiful Highlands Plateau always occupied a special place in his heart. We preserve these values as we adapt our facilities to provide golfers with an increasingly immersive experience with the mountain, and gleaming new gathering spaces in our Clubhouse for friends and family.

Our Growth

In the Spring of 2019, the Club decided to undergo an extensive renovation on the Golf Course, in addition to our Clubhouse improvements. Bill Bergin with Bergin Golf Designs was selected for this beguiling task. Though the southern Appalachian Mountains have a reputation for being the “rainforest of the east,” the project has made excellent progress and the completed back nine continues to receive glowing feedback from enthusiasts. Bill’s plans unearthed spectacular natural rock formations, imparting a rugged contrast to the water dominated scenery- “the par threes are truly a highlight as we bookend this nine with terrific holes along the lake, while having enhanced the view and magical feel of the waterfall par-three fifteenth” exclaims Bergin.

Also tasked with this project is Southeastern Golf Inc., a world class golf course construction company that has renovated courses across the US, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. “We made the right decision in selecting Southeastern to renovate our golf course.  Under tough conditions they have proved to be accommodating to our needs and skillful at realizing Bill Bergin’s vision for the golf course,” says Fred Gehrisch, our golf course Superintendent. “They have been the best team player.” Along with the assistance of Bergin Golf Designs and Southeastern Golf Inc., Fred and his team are busy at work doing what they can for the project in-house. Check out his Blog for the latest updates. If you’re itching for a sneak peek at the Back Nine, our Golf Course Gallery is a must see!

The Back Nine officially opens for play on May 1st, 2021, and our Front Nine Renovation is scheduled to be completed later this year. We will provide updates on HFCC Turf as we anxiously await our new golfing experience. As always, we look forward to continuing to grow and evolve as a Club with our members, providing immaculate facilities to take your play to a higher elevation!
